Food insecurity is of course a global struggle, but many people don't know that in Alberta, 1 out of every 3 families are experiencing food insecurity, or that more than 1 out of 3 children lives in a household experiencing food insecurity. This struggle impacts mental and physical health, community and relationships, and familial connection. The price of groceries has doubled in cost from 2002 to today (2026), and this issue is only expected to grow in severity as it is predicted that the average price of food in Canada will increase 4-6% in 2026. This not only affects people’s physical well-being, but also their mental health and social connection. Today, we face rising food prices and increasing reliance on food services. For example, Edmonton’s Food Bank supports over 47,000 people monthly, its highest demand in its history. This work is more critical than ever before. We're hoping that the FYRE Gardens project helps mobilize people to make a difference in the face of such a massive challenge.
