What We are Today: LFG

Lady Flower Gardens is a non-profit organization serving the Edmonton Food Bank. We garden in partnership with marginalized and underprivileged Edmontonians facing significant obstacles to their health and wellness including houselessness and substance use disorder. On average, LFG donates 25,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce to the Edmonton Food Bank every year.

Introduction to FYRE

The goal of transitioning to the Front Yard Revolution Edmonton (FYRE) Gardens program is to maintain the mission of LFG: bringing much-needed food to local food banks through community development. This project will repurpose the front lawns of ordinary Edmontonians all over our city. FYRE Gardens will essentially be good people growing good food in their front yards for local food banks, supporting their neighbours and communities through the simple act of planting a garden.

FYRE This Year - 2026

This year (2026), we are working hard to establish our first few FYRE Gardens. Listed here are the plans, such as removing the sod and replacing with cover crop or mulch. The next year will involve the planting of crops to be donated to local food banks.

Inspiration: Victory Gardens

This system of front yard gardens is based on the “victory gardens” that were planted in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia during both World Wars. They were citizen-run gardens initiated with the purpose of reducing strain on food supply systems, raising morale, and redirecting use of resources towards the war effort. These gardens provided fresh produce to combat food shortages and  empowered patriotic households in their goal of working together as a nation to support their troops.

Our movement will experiment with transforming front yards using a hybrid technique of different methods of sustainable  agriculture.

Food Insecurity: A Crisis

Food insecurity is a massive problem globally, and is more prevalent than ever here in Alberta where nearly 1 in 3 families experience this struggle. Food insecurity hinders positive mental and physical health, capacity for community building, and can impact family relationships. This is a complex issue, and serving local food banks is one way to make a tangible difference.

In Summary...
